The 8 has to be determined to make the violet horse pass the blue one..
Orange and Blue have to start their move immediately in front of the fence. So they can only change lane after the seventh counter (rules page 18). Orange needs 4 counters to jump over the fence, then moves 3 more straight ahead and changes lane to the left with eight.
Since you are not allowed to change lane while jumping a fence (rules page 18), Blue has to jump over the fence straight ahead. There are only two more squares left for the rest of the move as Orange blocks the lane and changing lane is not possible after 6.
The free inner lane cannot be used by Grey. Although Grey could change lane with the beginning of its move, there is no chance for the second change. This would require 6 straight ahead, but there are only five to go because Blue blocks the lane.
Violet can change immediately to the inner lane, jump over the fence and go two further squares straight ahead. During the following round of cards Violet now runs before Blue. Since Violet keeping the 4th position has not got any handicap, this is an excellent Position for the forthcoming finish.
